Pitched Roofs, Kent

Natural roof slate tiles have been used for over a thousand years and have the advantage of an attractive appearance, very durable and can last for many lifetimes. Natural slate can also re-used and you will know that when you use them, you are doing your bit to help the environment too. Roof slate tiles may not be modern but they are one of the best choices.

Pitched roofs come in all sorts of sizes and variations from slate and teracotta to Kent peg tiles. Thomas Roof Restoration will order all the materials required including some of the rarer French tiles may take longer to come in.

The process starts with a site survey. We will look in the loft to assess the condition of the underlying felt and battens and then we will examine the exterior, checking for broken and missing tiles. If these are in poor condition then we will replace everything, ensuring that your roof is watertight and looking good for years to come.

We offer a guarantee on all new pitched roofs.

FAQ's

Pitched roofs are champions of longevity and drainage. Their steep slopes allow rainwater and snow to run off naturally, reducing the risk of water pooling. Additionally, the "void" created underneath the slope allows for extra attic storage or future loft conversions, while providing superior thermal insulation.

The lifespan depends on the materials used:

  • Slate: Can last 75 to 100+ years.

  • Clay Tiles: Typically last 50 to 60 years.

  • Concrete Tiles: Generally last 40 to 50 years.

  • Asphalt Shingles: Usually last 20 to 30 years.

Keep an eye out for these "red flags":

  • Light shining through: If you can see daylight in your attic, water can get in too.

  • Slipping or missing tiles: This exposes the underlay to UV damage and leaks.

  • Granules in the gutters: A sign that your tiles or shingles are reaching the end of their life.

  • Sagging ridgeline: This could indicate a structural issue that needs immediate professional attention.

In many cases, we can perform localised repairs—such as replacing a few broken tiles or fixing the lead flashing around a chimney. However, if the underlying felt (the "sarking") has perished or the majority of tiles are brittle, a full re-roof is often the most cost-effective long-term solution.

For an average-sized semi-detached home, a full re-roof usually takes between 5 to 8 working days, but it could be significantly quicker than that depending on the extent of the work that is required. We aim to keep the disruption to your daily routine as minimal as possible.

From traditional slate work to modern roofing systems, our local team brings decades of experience to every roof. We pride ourselves on high-quality craftsmanship that stands the test of time.
